Winter Monthly Time Trials

Snow joke as times plummet faster than the mercury at Altnaharra!

To the population as a whole we runners are often considered to be somewhat eccentric. Do we let a little bit of snow interfere with our training? No, not a chance! Will some low temperatures cause postponement of the monthly time trial? You must be joking!

Having been using the Caley for training since Siberia planted itself in Scotland, several of the usual participants knew exactly what lay in store and decided to go through to Edinburgh to cheer on the young Vics competing in the inter District Championships!

Those who remained were reminded that the Caley lake was not the Lake of Menteith and while ideal for curling, short cuts across the frozen lake would lead to disqualification!

Other than the ‘testing underfoot conditions’ (a euphemism for rutted ice, 15 cms of snow and a bit of ‘piste’ where the sledgers had been) the main concern for the time trialists was the balmy temperature of –2 and the possibility of overheating!

Newcomers Eric Donaldson and Craig Mitchell knew that regardless of how they ran they would be rewarded with PB’s. Everyone else knew that a PW was a certainty, the only question was by how much!

Starting off faster than a bargain hunter at the Next January sale young Craig’s enthusiam was sorely tested by the unremitting nature of the 3 miler, nonetheless he stuck to the task and finished with a very credible 24.45.

Stevie Moore’s course record was realistically never going to be threatened unless a visiting international athlete was staying at the Cladhan prior to the big race at Holyrood!

Stevie duly recorded the fastest time of the day with 20.33. Sarah Hamilton was also some way off her female course record when recording 23.45 but this gave her the fastest female time.

The ‘Time Trialist of the Month’ award usually recognises the athlete who improves most since their last performance, whereas this month it was calculated on whose time had decreased the least!

Hazel Murray’s time was only 1 minute 41 slower and was good enough to edge out Stevie M. who was 2 minutes 22 slower.

Next month we might be rewarded with running on grass again (remember those days?) but I’m not holding my breath!
