Summer Monthly Time Trials

And the winds blew- some people got faster!

While the Powfowlis 5k course may be pancake flat it is also very exposed, with little shelter to help tired runners.

The first two TTs of the summer were blessed with warm and settled weather, however on the final event conditions proved much more challenging.  A fierce south westerly gale in the runner’s faces made the second and third kilometres particularly tough.

Over the summer Tony Devlin and Barry Paterson have proved to be in form on the roads. Paterson, fresh from his victory over the mountainous Sherrifmuir 11 Miler the previous week, faced speedster Devlin who’d already captured both the mile and 5k TT records. Would conditions favour Barry’s strength or would Tony’s speed prevail?

Right from the off, Paterson made his intent clear by catching Sarah Hamilton who had set off a minute earlier, at the 1 k. mark. Devlin also wasted little time getting into his stride, passing David Murray before the 2k mark.

The final k was particularly challenging, a long straight into a headwind: here the slightest drop in pace will prove significant. There seemed little between both athletes as they powered towards timekeeper Gordon Mitchell and the sanctuary of the finish.

Paterson stopped the clock with an impressive 17.49 equalling the course record set in July. Two minutes later Devlin bettered that time by taking 10 seconds from his own record!

Both performances were particularly noteworthy given that conditions in July were flat calm!

Elsewhere, times amongst the mortals were influenced by the wind. Guest runner Lynne Murray was fastest female, though forty seconds slower than her previous attempt.

Under 17 athletes Lucy Michell, Sarah Hamilton and Hazel Murray are in the midst of track training and were not expected to threaten their PB’s. Sarah, however got truly ‘stuck in’ and posted a time almost four minutes faster than her previous attempt!

Elaine Thomson ran from home in New Carron as a warm up, then completed the 5k, proving the TT series can supplement endurance training!

Next month’s 1 mile TT will hopefully not be held in hurricane conditions and could witness a ‘titanic’ clash between the club’s speedsters! Racing shoes on, ‘free to fly’- Saturday 11 September, 9.30 at the Caley!
