Summer Monthly Time Trials

Tony flies on Time Trial Saturday!

While the rest of the world may have been watching a certain cycling time trial over in Bordeaux later in the afternoon, connoisseurs of the more sedate athletic version gathered for the Harrier’s monthly meet.

Action centred on the classic 1 mile course with road supremo turned track gazelle Tony Devlin looking to add to his recent list of impressive performances. A speedy 4.20, 1500m at the Open Graded meeting four days earlier indicated that the Madditson man had the pedigree to threaten Barry Patterson’s course record of 5.06.

Although a Contador, Schleck type duel did not materialise, Tony’s performance was more akin to Lance Armstrong of old as he blew apart both the field and the record book to record the first sub five minute time, slicing a massive 20 seconds from the old mark.

As one of the organising team commented, “Over the years, Harrier legends such as Gary Grindlay and Ian Johnston never managed the run that fast over this course. Tony really has thrown down the gauntlet to the rest of the boys and this time could easily stand for a long time!”

Guest athlete Lynne Murray showed the youngsters a clean pair of heels and a welcome return to form as she recorded the fastest time of the day in the ladies competition.

Rhuari Kirkwood picked up his first ever Time Trialist of the Month’ award as he knocked 29 seconds from his previous time set back in May.
