29th Great North Junior Run

Gateshead 19th September 2009

Saturday the 19th of September saw a lone Harrier heading to Gateshead for the 29th Great North Junior Run. The Great North Junior run is now the largest junior mass participation race in Europe with some 5000 kids entered.
You could not have asked for better weather, with blue skies and the thermometer topping at least 20degC.

11 year old Alana Boggan participating in her first Great North run did Falkirk Victoria Harriers proud finishing in a superb 5th place in her age category and setting a fantastic time of 16 mins 31 seconds over the 3 mile course.
Alana's race started on the Gateshead quay before crossing over the River Tyne swing bridge. An out/in loop of 2 miles brought her back up by the side of the River Tyne before going under the Tyne Bridge and crossing over again on the Millennium Bridge to finish the 3 mile course back on the quay side.

A very large crowd, including many famous faces and international athletes, and the addition of the BBC cameras making for a superb atmosphere. The highlight for Alana being the finish where she was announced as the first ‘SCOT’ home and her picture beamed over large screens on the quay side as she crossed the line.
