Matheson Wins 2011 European Title

Friday the 13th May was a good day for Falkirk Victoria Harrier, Fiona Matheson when she destroyed the field in the 10km race of the European Road Race Championships in Thionville, France close to the Luxemburg border. Matheson making her debut for the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Masters Athletics team won the ladies over 50 race by 4 minutes 45 seconds in an impressive time of 35 minutes 57 seconds when finishing fourth overall in the ladies race. Husband Grant was also competing later in the day in the main men’s race producing a creditable performance of 41 minutes and 5 seconds to finish 32nd in the men’s over 45 category.

In a busy weekend, Fiona was also part of the victorious GB&NI ladies Cross Country Relay team which as well as winning the over 50 age group finished an amazing 3rd overall in the ladies race.

To finish off a marvellous weekend, Fiona went one place better overall in the half marathon, finishing third overall when winning her age category finishing over seven minutes clear of the field in a time of 1 hour 20 minutes and 45 seconds leading the GB & NI team to the silver team medals.
